Packsys

Summary

The purpose of this project is to provide a robust centralized package management system that can be used with a variety of software distribution methods.

We hope to provide a mechanism by which to monitor and administer rpm's, tarballs, and more, from a centralized application/data source.

Future plans include adding support for remote deployment and management of packages.

I have not abandoned the project. The past year has been quite busy. Lately, I have been rethinking my whole design. I'm thinking of switching to writing the program in Python or Perl. I think it will solve a lot of the problems I've been having with the C/C++ version, and it will be much more platform independent. The down side is the dependency on the interpreter, but that can be addressed later if there is a real demand for a version that is not.

I committed changes to CVS tonight that implement the package remove feature. I also fixed the database ID. The program now generates unique ID (up to 10, I'm still trying to figure this one out). It still only supports tarball (.tar.gz).

I have put together some very, very bare code to start the project.   I have committed it to CVS, and will continue to use CVS, in order to prevent data loss.   Please bare with me; I am new to this and am still learning the ropes.

I had hoped to some files released by the end of December or January, but school and work do not want to cooperate, nor my hardware (a couple hard drive failures).  Hopefully I can get something out soon though.  Also tossed together this website to get out some info on the project in case anyone was watching it.  After I get some development done, I hope to clean up the site.
